Zootool and Ubiquity
As I went through some feeds today I found Ubiquity in an article on Ajaxian.
Ubiquity is pretty young and not even in beta, so some of you might probably not have heard about it. It is a Firefox extension which combines the functionality of a command-line tool with the browser. My first thought about it was that it is almost like Shaun Inman’s Shortwave bookmarklet as an embeded browser version, but after looking at the video, the full dimension of this thing is getting clearer!

Though I’m still preferring Safari over Firefox I thought that this is some great stuff and that it would be the perfect tool for Zootool users to make their images, videos, documents and links accessible from anywhere on the web and as fast as possible (as long as you’ve got firefox :-))!
So I sat down and hacked together the first version of a Zootool Ubiquity plugin and it works great!! All you’ve got to do now is to install Ubiquity and the Zootool plugin, hit Alt-Space on your keyboard, type in “zt” and then start to type any searchword to search for titles, urls or tags of entries in your zoo. Ubiquity shows any matching results as soon as you type, so this couldn’t be any faster!!!
To install Ubiquity just download the early version here: https://people.mozilla.com/~avarma/ubiquity-0.1.xpi
To install the Zootool-Plugin go to the tools page (sorry, only for logged in users). Firefox will automatically recognize the plugin and you can easily install it without even restarting Firefox!
As Ubiquity also this plugin is in an experimental state, though completely usable. The guys from mozilla say that Ubiquity is going to change a lot until its final release, so probably there will be some changes on this plugin in the near future, too! I’ve got some more ideas on how to extend the whole Ubiquity/Zootool interaction but this is the first step and I am excited what you think about it
Some of the regular readers here might have noticed that this isn’t german anymore! I was thinking about writing in english for quite some time and always avoided this step, ’cause I am not feeling very comfortable with my english! But I think it’s time! The english version of Zootool is online for over four month now and though there are still more german users, the english speaking ones are getting more and more! Yesterday Apple has approved the Zootool iPhone app to be posted on their website which will attract some more international guys and all this tech stuff like Ubiquity isn’t exactly very german, too, so I hope you continue reading this, even if it is written in terrible english now
