The last two days were horrible!! Tuesday night I planned to install a small update on our server – nothing special. Unfortunately something went really bad and at the end the whole filesystem was corrupted. We make plenty of database backups to be sure all the precious bookmarks can’t get lost, so that was not the problem. At the moment we’ve got about 20 GB of thumbnails. That’s not Flickr or Facebook but it’s enough to get busy when you need to push them around. To save money and time we were used to make a full backup of those thumbnails every two weeks. There’s still the chance to regenerate them when they get lost, so that seemed to be a fair enough solution. When all those files of the last two weeks – and that’s about 10.000 files – got lost on tuesday, we knew that we have to think that over again. It’s not a bad crash, we can’t fix and as I said before the database is much more important, but it’s a good point to start with a new backup and hosting strategy. At the moment we moved everything to a new server and a new hosting company and make redundant nightly backups of everything – but that’s another story I will write about in the next days along with some more exciting news.

I would like to thank all of you for your patience during this outage!!! It was a hard time for us to see Zootool down for more than just a few minutes and we are working hard to never let this happen again!
